“The Gloriana Tote” is inspired by Elizabeth I—sovereign of splendour, strategy, and self-determination.

Elizabeth I (1533–1603) was the original Gloriana. The last Tudor monarch, she reigned as Queen of England from 1558 to 1603 and became one of history’s most iconic female rulers.

Born to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, she overcame a perilous childhood and a court full of intrigue to ascend the throne at age 25. Her reign—later known as the Elizabethan Golden Age—was marked by cultural flourishing, naval triumphs, and political resilience in the face of constant pressure to marry.

Refusing to be defined by a king, she styled herself as the Virgin Queen, married to her country and its people. Through intelligence, charm, and a will of steel, she forged her independence in a world dominated by men. The poet Edmund Spenser immortalised her as “Gloriana”—a radiant, almost mythic queen of power and virtue.

Design Reflection

Standing before her troops as they prepared to face the Spanish Armada, Elizabeth I declared: “I have the body of a weak, feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king.”

Her power and elegance inspired this design. Its gently curved, heart-shaped top edge symbolises Elizabeth’s resolute spirit and strength of heart. The bold central panel represents the brave path she chose to take to shape her own destiny.
